“The musical version of ‘Frozen’ is an awesome spectacle with more heart, depth and darkness than the film.” – Time Out
Nominated for multiple Tony and Laurence Olivier Awards, Frozen the Musical is based on the massive hit 2013 Disney film of the same name. Like the film, the musical chronicles the story of sisters Elsa and Anna in the kingdom of Arendelle. But unlike the movie, the musical brings a whole new dimension to the beloved story, delving deeper into the emotions and struggles of its characters while still maintaining the essence of what made the film so special. As most critics note, the musical’s story evolved into something deeper and more serious while yet retaining some of the original’s playful touches. Nonetheless, kids will love it as it’s a show that the whole family can enjoy.
Like most musicals, Frozen is divided into two acts. The first act introduces the audience to the main characters, Elsa and Anna. Princess Elsa and her sister Anna are in Arendelle, the realm where the narrative all begins. The people do not know about Elsa’s magical abilities. Their parents go to the hidden folk for aid after Elsa’s magic causes a mishap, but Elsa becomes more afraid of her abilities. Years later, on the night before Elsa’s coronation, Anna longs to reunite with her sister, but Elsa is terrified to show the world her powers. Elsa succeeds at first, but during the coronation, she unintentionally shows her abilities, dooming Arendelle to endless winter. Anna embarks on a quest to locate Elsa, joined by Kristoff, an ice harvester, and Sven, his reindeer. Elsa, meanwhile, constructs an ice castle while fully embracing her abilities. This is when she belts out the famous “Let It Go.” Other song highlights of the first acts include “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” “Love Is an Open Door,” “For the First Time in Forever,” and “In Summer.”
The second act opens with Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf arriving at Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post & Sauna to meet the owner, Oaken. It is in the second act when Elsa belted out the original song “Monster.” Performed when she has a dilemma over her powers, the song “allows the audience to better understand her motivations,” especially when she blames herself for what happened to her sister. In her anger, she accidentally freezes her sister’s heart, which can only mended with “an act of true love.”
Just like the movie, the musical showed Prince Hans accusing Elsa of treason. Thus sentencing her to death. However, Anna discovers Hans’s treachery and selflessly gives her life to save Elsa, thawing her own heart in the process. It was that very act that ended the harsh winter in the entire kingdom – an act of true love for one’s sister to another. The song “Vuelie (Love Thaws)” encapsulates this wonderful scene.
“This adaptation brings an unexpected depth to the relationship between two tortured sisters.” – The Guardian
Although the Broadway run for the musical started in March 2018, the inception and early developments of Frozen Musical started four years back in 2014. Disney Theatrical Productions produced the musical with the aim of making a spectacular version that will follow the footsteps of the animated movie.
Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who wrote the songs, were also on the excellent production team. Screenwriter Jennifer Lee also returned for a cameo. Music supervisor Stephen Oremus collaborated with choreographer Peter Darling and director Alex Timbers to make sure that they captured the magic of the movie and brought it to the stage.
On March 22, 2018, the St. James Theatre opened as the Broadway venue for the highly-anticipated musical. After a total of 825 performances and 26 previews, the show closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently, the North American Tour of the musical, which started in 2019, also needed to be paused.
“A fabulous theatrical spectacle for all ages, a heart-warming celebration of love, family, and self-acceptance that is visually and musically stunning.” – The Harvard Crimson
The original Broadway production of Frozen The Musical garnered two nominations in the Drama Desk Awards, taking home the “Outstanding Puppet Design” award. This did not come as a surprise as the production highlighted a state-of-the-art way of presenting nonhuman characters like Sven and Olaf and lighting effects for Elsa’s snow power. Moreover, it snagged four nominations in the 2018 Tony Awards, including “Best Musical” and Best Book of a Musical.”
Fast forward to 2023, the show resumed and was performed in many cities in the United States. Frozen Musical also has adaptations outside the country, including the West End production in 2021. Germany, Japan, and Norway also had their own productions, which, as expected, met with similar success to their Broadway counterparts.
