Happening mainly in the time span in the middle of the widespread rebellion in 1832 in Paris, France, Les Misérables is the story of Jean Valjean, a local of Paris, France who was sentenced for almost two decades because of a small act of theft for his nephew. After his release on parole, he escapes and searches for redemption as an honest man; he then adopts a brand new persona as Monsieur Madeleine, while still protecting his newfound lifestyle and avoiding Javert, an officer with a rigid belief in the law and determined to catch and bring the ex-convict to justice.

Transpiring over a span of roughly two decades covered by the musical's 2-hour and 50-minute run, Valjean happens to be intertwined in one way or another with a few key people throughout the show – Fantine is one of Monsieur Madeleine’s factory laborers who is the mother of an illegitimate child; Cosette is the foster baby of Madeleine, who by no surprise Fantine’s infant; Marius, a young Frenchman fighting for the rebellion and the love interest of Cosette. Other roles featured in the musical consist of the Thénardiers, abusive proprietors who also lead a street gang and are obsessed with their own personal gain; Eponine, their daughter, who harbors a secret love for for Marius; and comrades of the insurgency including Gavroche, a small but resourceful orphan, and the rebellion’s leader, Enjolras.

This motley group of characters who meet by fate and their unique tales are brought to life on live stage, not just with the musical's 19th century French-inspired outfit and prop design, but principally with the musical being sung-through fully from beginning to end. With famous songs like “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as part of its magnificent song list, the heart-stopping show is able to reveal the underlying motives beneath every character that plays out beautifully in each performance.
