Happening specifically during the period concurrent with the Rebellion of 1832 in Paris, France, Les Misérables is the story of Jean Valjean, a resident of Paris, France who was sentenced for almost two decades as a consequence of a small act of theft for his nephew. After his time on the chain gang, he escapes and looks for a second chance to live his life; Valjean then adopts a different name as Monsieur Madeleine, while still constantly being pursued by his nemesis, Javert, an officer who has known Valjean since his time in the chain gang and intent on capturing and bringing Valjean back to prison.
Transpiring over a period of roughly 20 years consisting of the show's two acts, Valjean happens to be entangled through fated encounters with numerous main characters throughout Les Mis – Fantine is one of Jean Valjean's factory workers who gives birth to an illegitimate baby; Cosette is the adoptive daughter of Madeleine, who is in fact Fantine’s daughter; Marius, a student on the side of the revolt and the true love of Cosette. Other roles featured in the musical are the Thénardiers, immoral proprietors who pay no heed to their daughter and are consumed with their own personal gain; Eponine, their child, who is desperately infatuated with for Marius; and comrades of the insurgency specifically Gavroche, a young but talented street urchin, and the opposition’s charismatic leader, Enjolras.
This vibrant cast of characters who are part of one struggle and their personal hardships are presented beautifully on stage, not just with the musical's 1800s French-based outfit and prop design, but distinctly with Les Mis being sung-through fully from the first to last line of the play. With hit songs such as “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as part of its astounding score, the musical is able to portray the emotion, passion, and tragedy beneath every character that comes to life in the theater.
